Volvo has introduced several upgrades for the new model year (2016). As usual, their goal is to make cars more efficient and less damaging to the environment. So, if you're looking to buy a Euro 6 compact car from the Swedes, we have good news.
Starting off strong, we learn about a new all-wheel drive variant for the T6 turbo petrol engine that will be available in 60 different model configurations. How come there are so many cars? We don't know, but they probably counted every trim level twice.
Precise details are not available, but we're told that on the S60, V60, the output of the Euro 6 unit is 306 PS and 400 Nm of torque (295 lb-ft). Meanwhile, in the flagship XC90 SUV, the T6 generates 320 PS and is available alongside a T5 model with 254 PS and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft).
We have confirmation from Volvo officials that the engine for these T6 AWD models is indeed the 2-liter four-cylinder one with a supercharger and turbocharger installed and not the old inline-6 that the T6 used to have for the 2015 model year. It was previously available only on the T6 models with front-wheel drive.
The 2016 S60 and V60 models will also be available with a new T2 powertrain. It drinks petrol at a slow and steady rate, returning a modest output of - wait for it - 122 PS and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque while also meeting Euro 6 regulations. That would be a BMW 318i competitor if ever we saw one.
Lastly, some tech updates have changed the cabins of some models. Volvo’s Sensus navigation now receives real-time traffic information and free map updates. What's more, the XC90 is now available with CarPlay, which is great news for people with iPhones.
