A little while back, Volvo Cars chief executive officer Hakan Samuelsson announced that the S80 is going to be replaced by an all-new model baptized S90. Slated to enter production after the spring 2015 debut of the all-new X90 seven-seater SUV, now it’s been confirmed the Chinese will make the new sedan.
You’ve heard that right. The Volvo S80 has been with us since 1998, but the executive sedan is going to be phased out by 2016 because of the upcoming S90. The Swedish automaker underlined recently that its Daqing, China plant will handle assembly of the much-anticipated Volvo S90. “We are pleased to announce that we are going to introduce SPA and a new sedan here,” declared Samuelsson at a recent event.

Although information is kept under strict control at the present moment, it’s certain the S90 will employ the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) just like its SUV brother. As a brief reminder, this is a flexible platform that will cover most of Volvo's future car models. This move will also make Daqing one of the most modern and highly-technologized passenger vehicle making facilities in China.

Volvo estimates passenger car sales in China to surpass 80,000 this calendar year

The Swedes also announced a long-term goal of selling 200,000 vehicles per year in the Asian country. Some reports hint the Volvo S90 will enter production in early 2016, while an insider suggested the S90’s cabin design will be a carbon copy of that of the XC90’s, including the tablet-like media system.

If those suggestions will hold water, then the mechanical side isn’t that big of a secret. As such, the 2016 Volvo S90 will employ pretty much the same 2-liter Drive-E powerplants of the second-gen XC90. The turbo'd and supercharged T6 with 320 horsepower and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) at its disposal would be nice.

On an ending note, the future holds many surprises. It’s anybody’s guess if all-wheel drive will be offered, but we have a hunch a T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid 2016 Volvo S90 will most certainly become reality.
