Would you like to spend over €44,000 on a Volkswagen Sharan, even though it's old? Well, you are in luck, as the Germans have just introduced a flagship powertrain, identical to what the best SEAT Ateca uses.
It consists of the 2.0 TDI engine producing 184 PS and 380 Nm of torque. Sure, you could buy that before, even with a 6-speed DSG gearbox. But this one has a newer 7-speed DSG, the same as in the Tiguan, plus the 4Motion AWD is thrown in for good measure.
In the old days, AWD tourers used to be common. There was even a soft-roading version of the SEAT Altea, which is roughly based on the same platform as this Sharan.
Volkswagen's press release says the 184 PS is mainly known from the Golf GTD and "provides the perfect combination of sportiness and efficiency." In reality, the AWD Sharan isn't designed to get your pulse racing, but to deal with special tasks. And we say that because the minimum weight of this configuration is an almost unbelievable 1,923 kilograms, roughly the same as the lightest Audi Q7.
For example, it's shown in the press photo while pulling a horse box, and that's because it has a maximum towing load of 2.4 tons, which is more than some crossovers. You've probably seen plenty of cars with 2,430 liters of maximum storage, but this Sharan is also able to cope with 750 kilos of cargo, the same as a commercial van.
There are even a couple of innovative gadgets. For example, you can keep an eye on what you're towing via a GoPro camera who's image is transferred onto the display in the car via Mirror Link and an Android phone connected to the infotainment system.
However, for safety reasons (so as not to distract the driver), the camera only displays one still image every 5 seconds. While standing still or at a speed of up to 5 km/h, a constant video stream is available.
This flagship powertrain is available from €44.000 (Comfortline trim). However, you can also order the €47.725 Allstar with ACC, front assist and powered sliding rear doors.
