2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid One Limited Edition Marks European Debut of the Prius SUV

Toyota is widely credited with launching the hybrid market. However, the Japanese automaker has been falling behind in the SUV department, where Audi, BMW and Porsche all launched high-riding hybrid models. That has been fixed with the introduction of the RAV4 Hybrid in Europe, which debuts together with a limited edition called Hybrid One.

By launching the new RAV4 model range (mid-life facelift), Toyota introduces the first hybrid compact SUV in Europe. The Hybrid One model will be limited to only 200 units that customers can order over the internet.

Features include the glacial white paint, larger 18-inch wheels, standard bi-LED headlights, LED taillights, leather seats, satellite navigation and a sunroof. Also included in the deal is a premium sound system with 11 speakers made by JBL.

Toyota is famous for offering more standard equipment than the Germans. The RAV4 is no exception, as the tech side includes a surround view monitor, reversing camera, road sign recognition, auto headlights and lane assist.

It was 15 years ago that Toyota started selling hybrids across the world. The RAV4 Hybrid is much more advanced than the Mk1 Prius, not to mention it's their 8th electrified model.

The power of two comes from the NX300h, Lexus' compact crossover. Under the bonnet, we find a 2.5-liter four-cylinder running the Atkinson cycle and an electric motor, linked to a standard Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive System.

Developing total system power of 197 hp, the new RAV4 Hybrid combines a seamless, 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.7 seconds with impressive fuel consumption of only 4.9 l/100 km and low CO2 emissions 115 g/km.

Today, cumulative Toyota hybrid sales in Europe almost total in 1 Million since the European launch of the first Prius in 2000. The Japanese company now has the widest range of any non-premium automaker, starting with the cheap little Yaris Hybrid and ending with the Prius PHEV.

Only time will tell if Europeans will buy the RAV4 Hybrid, but with the Dieselgate scandal going on at the moment, the time is right to forgo diesel power.
