2016 Skoda Superb Acceleration Test Proves a Wagon Can Be Faster Than Supercars

0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.8 seconds. That’s how much a 2016 Skoda Superb needs to knock on the three-digit door, which is rather impressive for a mid-size family car with a four-cylinder engine. However, the fastest Superb out there isn’t just any kind of Superb. It’s the most [wait for it] Superb of them all.
The model I’m referring to is the wagon with the top-of-the-range 2.0 TSI engine. Believe it or not, there’s not a lot of weight difference between the liftback sedan and wagon: 1,540 kilos (3,395 pounds) compared to 1,560 kilos (3,439 pounds). Regardless of the sheet metal, the four-cylinder engine is good for 280 PS (276 horsepower) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

The most surprising thing about the Superb wagon with this engine, however, is that is puts supercars to shame. In a game of Top Trumps and in real life, the 2016 Skoda Superb 2.0 TSI 280 PS wagon puts the 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera, 1976 Ferrari 308 GTB, original Honda NSX, and Lotus Esprit to shame.

In a straight line and only to 62 mph (100 km/h), that is. But still, this is a mind-boggling detail if you bear in mind that this is a family car with a huge trunk. Mind you, the Superb in this configuration also boasts all-wheel-drive and a fast-shifting DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, go-faster goodies that the supercars listed beforehand don’t have. “That’s fine and all, but how much does this longroof cost?”

In the United Kingdom, where the following drag race has been filmed, the 2016 Skoda Superb Estate SE L Executive 2.0 TSI 280 PS 4x4 DSG starts from £32,745. In Germany, the equivalent model is priced from €41,490. At first glance, it may seem like a lot of dough. Still, you do get the most powerful production Skoda ever built and old-school supercar performance with a price tag that doesn’t run into six figures.
