2016 Renault Megane Coupé Rendered

Ever since we first saw official photos of the Megane hatchback, we knew this day was coming. Somebody has done a great job of making a coupé and we're sorry that Renault will never build one.

"Never" is kind of a big word, but when a Renaultsport official starts his list of changes for the next hot hatch with a 5-door body, you know what's about to happen. The Clio also lost its 3-door version when it transitioned into its fourth incarnation. There simply isn't enough demand for such cars there days.

Some people don't consider FWD 3-door hatchbacks to be true coupés. The VW Scirocco might disagree with that notion, but there is some truth here. While the 2016 Megane Coupé in these images has gained style, it's lost a lot of practicality. Getting in and out of the back seats is undignified for some and impossible for others.

The cosmetic changes made by Theophilus Chin include a shorter wheelbase, longer doors and tweaked taillights and a rakish rear hatch.

Part of this Megane's added appeal comes from it being a GT model. While we wait (two years) for the RS version to arrive, this version will keep the 275 Trophy's seat warm. Power comes from the same 1.6-liter as used by the Clio RS and can be sent to the front via either a 6-speed manual or an EDC twin-clutch automatic.

Twin exhaust, 18-inch alloys and a body kit are all part of the GT look. However, the 4th Megane also has party tricks. For starters, it can be fitted with active rear steering, just like the larger Laguna. A digital dashboard and heads-up display are some of the features that will impress even German car owners.

We're pretty sure the 3-door Megane body is gone for good. But Renault has done so much cost cutting lately that they're bound to have extra cash in the bank. So what do you say mister Carlos Ghosn, can we have a VW Scirocco rival?

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
