In the world of full-size pickup truck, the honorable Nissan Titan was, until recently, the oldest of the lot. Since the model was introduced in 2003, the Titan suffered minimal changes until the 2015 Detroit Auto Show saw the debut of the second generation.
Truth be told, the first-generation Nissan Titan was a little on the square-ish side of the visual deal, while the Tennessee-built 5.6-liter VK56DE V8 wasn't the last word in sophistication, not even for trucks. Thankfully, styling and powertrain options have significantly changed with the new for 2016 Nissan Titan.
Challenging the full-size pickup truck segment with a 5-liter ISV Cummins V8 turbo diesel with 310 horsepower and 555 lb-ft (752 Nm) of torque, the derivative they call Titan XD is the one to look forward to. Nissan may classify it as being a down-to-earth light-duty workhorse, but heavy-duty is its real nature.
Heavy-duty components like the frame, suspension, 6-speed Aisin automatic and such make the 2016 Nissan Titan XD capable of towing up to 12,000 lbs (5,443 kg) and boast with a bigger payload than 2,000 lbs (907 kg). The gasoline V8 and V6 are not even worth considering because of the ISV Cummins V8.
But you know what boggled our minds more than what this Japanese truck built with American parts in the U.S. of A. can do on paper? Its styling and the poshness of the cabin. As Diane Allen, senior design manager at Nissan Design America, declared in the Truckumentary video below, the Titan is worksite-tough underneath, yet it's been given premium everything on the inside. All in all, it's worth the 4-minute watch.
