Mercedes-Benz's CEO has semi-officially declared that 2015 is "the year of the SUV". After the GLE Coupe, the Germans will show the regular GLE in April, replacing the ML, followed in quick succession by the the GLC (all-new GLK replacement) and GLS (GL facelift).
The idea behind this changed naming strategy is that the last letter reflects where the SUV stands in the range in comparison to a normal sedan. So, for example, the GLS is the S-Class of the 4x4 world.

And like the S-Class, the Mercedes-Maybach division may want a slice of the action. No longer required to build unique body shells based on the S, the Maybach division is now free to think about an uber-luxury version of the GLS. The rumor re-surfaced today, but dates back to the summer of 2014.

After seeing the 2016 Maybach S600
limo in Detroit a couple of days ago, we have to agree that it makes perfect sense to launch a similar version of the GLS, especially when demand from China and the Middle East would be high. The highlights of Maybach's interiors seem to include superior 3D sounds systems from Burmeister, different leather finishes, more connectivity and things like champagne coolers… to give you a taste of the finer things in life.

Up next, we're going to show you a rendering of what the potential Mercedes-Maybach GLS-Class may look like from the outside. For starters, new headlights and taillights will be installed. But the grille and the extended wheelbase will be unique to the luxury model. All the interior upgrades we mentioned will also be introduced, but there are a few question marks hanging over the engine range. GLS 400 and GLS 500 models are pretty much a given, since the engines they would come with are already available on the outgoing GL-Class. But what about the 600? Will they stuff a 6-liter V12 in there, or will they leave that section of the market to Bentley's Bentayga?
