2016 Mercedes-AMG GLS63 Is Getting Ready to Roll in a Bend Near You

What you see here is the new Mercedes-AMG GLS63, the top performance version of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz GL. This mid-life refreshment for the largest of posh Mercedes-Benz SUVs will also bring the dreaded new naming scheme, linking the old GL with its saloon counterpart, the S-Class.

That means the facelifted model will go by the name of Mercedes-Benz GLS or Mercedes-AMG GLS63, respectively. Our spy photographers have caught one such example testing on the road and we thought it would be a good idea to share their work.

The Mercedes-AMG GLS63 is wearing less camouflage than it did the previous times its picture was snapped, so we can get a better idea now about how the car will look like. Well, to put it bluntly, it will look like a facelifted Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG, that's how.

The 2016 Mercedes-AMG GLS63 seems to get pretty much the same front end treatment as the other Mercedes-AMG SUVs, with new headlights, radiator grille and lower bumper, and why shouldn't it? The car looks mean enough, but it also can't hide the fact it is a heavy behemoth and we can already see in one of the images how much it leans over when turning.

But that's not why we or anybody else liked the Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG: it's because it was exactly what the new name suggests, an SUV version of the wonderful S-Class. Sure, there are also get the G 63 and 65 AMG, but even though they get equally spectacular interiors, it's that freakish off-road ability that prevents them from becoming true luxury machines.

The Mercedes-AMG GLS63 can get off-road as well, but its looks tell you it doesn't want to. And neither should you.

Alright, back to the pictured car and after the not so impressively taken corner, we get to see its back too. There's not much to tell here, the new GLS63 getting a new bumper and restyled taillights.

The car is expected to debut later this year as a 2016 year model. Our photographers also wanted to make sure we appreciate the perfect sunset light, so we're passing this information over to you as well. It has to be said, these are some of the best spyshots we've seen in a while. Make sure you check the full image gallery below.
