With less than a month to go until the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata is revealed, details are starting to emerge for this iconic lightweight roadster. As expected, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will feature a heavy dose of Mazda’s current KODO design language, but the automaker’s head of operations in Australia said that the roadster will be a stark departure from the current design.
Over its first 25 years of existence, the Mazda Miata has generally carried the same look across the different generations, but Martin Benders, head of Mazda Australia operations, recently told The Motor Report that next-gen Miata would “look nothing like” the Miata design we’ve come to know and love. More importantly, the article says that the styling used for the new Miata will be an “evolved version” of the language found on current Mazda products like the CX-6, Mazda3 and Mazda6.

Benders provided no further details as to what the future has in store for the Miata, but this does fit in with what we saw in a recent teaser video of the new Miata that states the car will be a revolution, not an evolution of today’s Miata. In that video, Mazda all but confirms that the 2016 Miata will feature a turbocharged engine just based on the amazing audio.

Mazda has already announced that the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata would make its global debut on September 3 at three simultaneous unveilings around the world. The U.S. debut will take place during an enthusiast event at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

While there isn’t much time until we can finally lay our eyes on the ND Miata, we still haven’t heard news about its sister car that will be sold by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. This car will likely arrive wearing Fiat and/or Abarth badges, but as little as we know about the next-gen Miata, there’s even less info about the Fiat version. With auto show season kicking off soon, that will probably change very soon.
