2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Arrives in North America

Presented on September 4th, 2014, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata started production at the Hiroshima plant exactly six months after the unveiling event. The Japanese roadster is, at long last, setting foot on North American soil, finding its way to American dealership lots and expecting customers.

The best-selling two-seat sports car of all time is now at its fourth generation, and it’s as good as soft-top motoring gets this side of an Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante. In the US, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata starts at $25,735 including the destination charge. That’s $945 more than the 2015 model year (third-gen), but you do get a lot more equipment, grunt, and Jinba Ittai for the sum of money that separates the two.

What you can admire in the video below isn’t a sea of Soul Red, nor hundreds of Mazda MX-5 Miata wearing masking tape on their noses and bums. These babies represent the first US-spec lot of the all-new Miata, waiting to start the port processing procedures and to be delivered to dealers.

The humongous transport vessel is Phoenix Leader, which anchored in San Diego at 04:23 AM on June 30th. Built in 2004 and boasting the Panama flag, the cargo ship is now in the Pacific, heading to Japan at a steady 16.2 knots for its second US-specification 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata transport.

All North American MX-5s you see in the adjacent video are Launch Edition models. Animated by a 2-liter SkyActiv-G engine with 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft (200 Nm), the MX-5 with the six-speed manual weighs 2,332 pounds (1,058 kilograms) while the automatic tips the scales at 2,381 lbs (1,080 kg).
