The Nurburgring has been recently visited by a four-wheeled Frankenstein with a Maserati badge. The fact that the Italians have reached the Nordschleife with the future Levante crossover still in a test mule phase (dressed as a Ghibli) means we should see a proper prototype soon.
The spy photos we are bringing you also take us inside the vehicle, where we obviously find the Ghibli atmosphere. You can see just how much abuse the test vehicle has endured judging by the worn leather on the seats.

As for what will power the Levante, Ferrari has already gifted Maserati with all the right hardware. To be more precise, the base unit will be a twin-turbo V6 delivering 350 hp, while we’ll also get a 420 hp version of the engine.

The Maserati Quattroporte GTS will lend its twin-turbo V8 to the Levante, which means we’ll get a 560 hp model to rival the Cayenne Turbo S. Speaking of which, we’ll remind you the Zuffenhausen machine is the first Porsche to lap the ‘Ring in under 8 minutes. Oh yes, the Italian engineers have quite a lot of work on their hands.

On the European side of the deal, Maserati is expected to offer up to three diesel units with outputs ranging between 250 and 340 hp.

The SUV segment is currently in the midst of a once-unimaginable transformation. After Porsche broke the rules and built an SUV in the early 2000s, things appeared to have settled.

However, we are now in an era when Bentley and Jaguar are both working to complete the development of their first SUVs, while Lamborghini and Aston Martin have only shown us concepts so far. Then there’s McLaren, who wouldn’t come up with such a vehicle. For now.
