2016 Indian Chief Dark Horse Revealed, Price Is Appealing – Video, Photo Gallery

Indian Motorcycle reveals the latest addition to the bike line-up, in the form of the all-new 2016 Chief Dark Horse. A photo of the new Dark Horse leaked earlier so the bike is not a total surprise. However, we like what we see, even though the darkened machine doesn’t stray too much from the beaten path of the new-generation Chief Classic. If a solo mean machine trimmed in matte black sis your thing, then book a test ride with your nearest Indian dealer and prepare to spend $17,000 (US price equivalent to €14,925).

Indian made no secret that the new Dark Horse would be built on the same platform as the rest of the air-cooled big-bore beasts. Still, the silhouette of the new machine introduces indeed a different vibe, if one we say before in the older model. The 2016 Chief Dark Horse drops almost all the shiny chrome and bling, and bringing forth black engine and engine case paint, black rims and a lighter build.

Cast rims as a token of modernism

One of the things which link the Dark Horse with the modern times is the cast alloy wheels. Frankly, we believe that Indian could have done much better there and chosen a more radical design. The standard trim ones are… well, very dull. We expect that Dark Horse fans would welcome them cheering, but a quick look around in the cast wheels niche will reveal infinitely cooler designs for a similar price.

The 2016 Dark Horse was designed primarily as a solo machine, but you can add room for a passenger by installing a rear seat and pegs. However, these items are on the options list. The engine is the same Thunder Stroke 111 unit, whose 1,811cc v-twin cylinders produce just over 73 hp at 4,500 rpm, and 119.2 lb-ft (161 Nm) at 3,000 revs.

Another cool feature for the Dark Horse is the fact that Indian equipped the bike with true dual exhaust acoustically engineered to remove the high-pitched sounds, as the official brochure tells us. If this claim is true (we still have to hear the Dark Horse revved hard), then this should be a really nifty treat, especially for those who don’t like the farty tones of the “classic American bikes”. If low-frequency thundering rumble is the real sound of the Dark Horse, then we’re hooked.

The bike is of course loaded with all the high-tech features its other siblings benefit from, such as ABS, cruise control, top-notch fuel injection, a comprehensive single-gauge dash loaded with telltale light indicators, an analog speedo and a LCD screen.

Dark Horse will reach the dealerships in spring 2015, and in Europe it will be sold with a neat 5-year warranty. If you’re eyeing a demo ride, start making plans for the annual Daytona Bike Week from March 7th – 14th, 2015, as the Dark Horse will be there.
