After the 2015 Hyundai i30 facelift was unveiled in December, the South Korean automaker seems to be working on revamping the i30’s liftback sedan brother, which is known as the Elantra. As the current-generation celebrates its fifth year of production in 2015, Hyundai is now hard at testing the sixth-gen Elantra and we have some spy photos of the thing.
According to industry voices, the all-new Elantra is going to arrive on Hyundai’s domestic market early next year, after a late 2015 debut. Codenamed AD, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra (Avante in Korea) will be adorned with taillights inspired design-wise by the new i20’s clusters, while the radiator grille and the bumper resemble those of the Genesis and Sonata.

LED strips also flank the sides of the front bumper, while the side profile look is pretty much the same with the outgoing generation of the Elantra. Aligned with the Hyundai Fluidic Precision design language, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra tones down the Fluidic Sculpture styling of the past with a hexagonal grille design we know from the newest crop of models.

That proper handbrake lever is a tell-tale sign this test mule is fitted with a manual gearbox.

As for engine choice, the new Elantra will be offered in both GDI (gasoline) and CRDi (turbo diesel) formats, as well as Turbo GDi (a petrol mill we detailed in our story about the 2015 Hyundai i30 facelift). A hybrid is also rumoured to follow sometime in the future.

Even though the glasshouse and window lines are achingly similar to those of the current model, it’s easy to see that the seat design and quality of the cloth and plastics have been improved a little. In addition to the aforementioned, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra compact liftback sedan will also spawn a coupe brother by mid-2017 if we’re not mistaken.
