The lure of 707 horsepower is hard to resist, more so if you take into consideration that $60,000 will buy you the Hellcat ticket. Wait, scrap that. The 2016 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat will be up $2,500 compared to the current model year, while the four-door Charger SRT Hellcat is going to be $1,950 more.
Why's that?
Demand is the relationship between blah-blah and more economy jibber-jabber. In an interview with The Detroit News, Dodge officials confirmed that the 2016MY Hellcat twins will be pricier "due to enhanced standard equipment, including navigation and Laguna leather." Yeah, right. It's worth mentioning that the new pricing excludes destination tax and the gas guzzler tax.
For the sorry souls that got their 2015 model year orders cancelled, Dodge announces that they'll be able to get their dose of 2016 Dodge Hellcat muscle at 2015MY pricing. That's a nice touch, although cancelling orders isn't. So we have a $62,495 Challenger SRT Hellcat and a $65,945 Charger SRT Hellcat at hand.
What happens after selling some 4,500 Hellcats through early August?
Based on its the brand awareness the Dodge peeps got since day one of Hellcat bonanza, the next step is to transplant the 707 horsepower 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V8 blunderbuss under the hood of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Currently known as Project K, Fiat-Chrysler is not commenting on the possibility of a Hellcat-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee. Still, several reports imply that Jeep is currently testing the much-rumored Grand Cherokee Trailhawk on US streets, camouflaged as a factory-standard SRT model.
We've reviewed the Grand Cherokee SRT and, for the love of all things this side of a HEMI V8, what a glorious beast it is. One can only imagine the possibilities of more power, more torque, revised suspension, and a recalibrated four-wheel drive system. Fastest production SUV in the world? Not so fast – the Tesla Model X all-electric crossover SUV has something to say about the internal combustion engine's limitations.
