2016 Chevrolet Malibu Spied Testing in Germany

Since the nameplate was ressurected in 1997, the Malibu was and still is the golden bowtie manufacturer’s fighter in the mid-size segment. Currently at its eight generation, the newest breed is already 3 years old, which is a tell-tale sign an all-new Chevrolet Malibu is due by the end of 2015.
So what’s in store for the 2016 Malibu? It is hard to say because of the swirly and black camouflage that’s hiding this test mule, but the masking is not so extreme we can’t pinpoint a few aesthetic changes. It’s impossible to tell if anything was done to the fog light bezels design, but those gawky strips of LED lights appear to be a pre-production business only.

If you look very hard, the dual-port grille that dominates the front fascia of modern Chevrolet models appears to have been mildly restyled with softer edges. While those funny-looking headlights don’t tell a thing, it’s certain the streamlined front bumper design will be adopted by the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.

Spied by our carparazzi in Germany, the fog-laden pictures also show that the all-new Malibu is going to adopt a lower, sloped roof for added sportiness. It may sound like a bit of automotive blasphemy, but think of this new rear end design as a fastback-styled machine in the vein of the Audi A7.

Even though the taillight units are still a prototype affair, we do expect the model to adopt clusters that continue into the trunk door. This visual gimmick makes a car appear a little more imposing by artificially adding width. In terms of underpinnings, do expect the Epsilon II platform to make an appearance.

Compared to the 2015 Malibu, the new-gen prototype is obviously larger in wheelbase and track width, which makes us believe that the Epsilon II was used to make the pictured vehicle happen. The 2.5-liter engine and the 2.0 turbocharged four-pot are expected to be carried over with a few minor revisions.
