It was March, 2009, when the fifth generation Chevrolet Camaro started production in coupe guise at the General Motors Oshawa plant in Ontario, Canada. Fast forward to January 31st, 2011, and that particular day saw GM start production of the 2011 Camaro Convertible, after which the soft top pony car arrived at dealers in February. With the 2016 Camaro, a 2-year delay isn’t acceptable for General Motors.
For starters, we know that the GM Lansing Grand River Assembly plant will take over 2016 Chevrolet Camaro manufacturing duties in the second half of 2015. Secondly, the sixth generation Camaro will arrive a little late to the party. As a brief reminder, both Dodge and Ford refreshed their Challenger and Mustang last year, which leaves the golden bowtie manufacturer the last to do the same.

Considering Ford launched the S550 Mustang in both fastback and convertible guise from the get-go, it’s easy to foresee that Chevy will offer the new Camaro in both body styles from the very beginning as well.

A 2-year delay between the Camaro coupe and Camaro convertible is just too much wasted time that doesn’t really make sense considering all of the aforementioned. It would be really bad if proven wrong...

After numerous rendering of the fixed head coupe 2016 Camaro, we decided to ask our very own rendering artist to imagine how the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible could look like. To put it simply - pretty and stunning if Chevy will offer a magnesium-look option for the windshield’s frame, A pillars and all. Swapping that metal above your head for a retractable fabric roof brings more entertainment for all occupants.

There are a number of styling questions previous 2016 Chevrolet Camaro spy photos can’t answer through renderings, details such as the headlight clusters’, fog lights’ and side mirrors’ design, but what you’re seeing above is approximately 85 percent of what is there to expect from the soft top variant of the pony.

Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the new Camaro’s exterior styling is more evolutionary than revolutionary, but it would be ludicrous to call it ugly. If you're still having second thoughts about the Alpha platform-underpinned 2016 Camaro, look forward for a live debut at the New York Auto Show.
