2016 Chevrolet Camaro Unleashed

As the fifth-gen Camaro celebrates 493,815 units sold in the United States of America, the golden bowtie manufacturer released the first ever teaser video of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS and its snarling V8.

From August 2009 through January 2015, the fifth generation of the ‘Maro sold nearly half a million examples, which is no small feat for an American sportscar with a muscly attitude. However, the 2015 model year Camaro isn’t this story’s focal point.

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro in SS guise is. Our GM insider suggested that the new breed will be unveiled in the weekend prior to memorial day, at the Indianapolis 500 race. Furthermore, the GMI forum moderator added: “the first pre-production cars were built this week,” so guess what’s next.

Magnetic Ride Control magnetorheological suspension, two vents in the bonnet, quad exhaust tips and up to 460 horsepower and 465 lb-ft (630 Nm) are the things to look forward to in the 2016 Camaro SS’ case.

I admit I’m not too happy about the 60,000-mile/5-year powertrain warranty, but come on! Play the teaser video below and hear the 2016MY sing its naturally aspirated V8 burble from the 57-second mark. If my hearing isn’t failing me, that’s the LT1 small-block V8 of the 2015 Corvette Stingray, so prepare to say goodbye to the good ol’ LS3 V8 blunderbuss. Yup, the sixth-gen marks the end of an era.

With these being said, just imagine how the soon-to-debut 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS will be like to drive thanks to a Cadillac ATS-derived GM Alpha platform, a purported seven-speed manual (from the C7 Corvette) and the fast-shifting GM Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission.
