The 2016 Camaro performance numbers are in and we can now officially congratulate the sixth generation model for its successful efforts to demonstrate modern muscle cars have grown from straight line performers into all-round runners.
We’ll start with a little spoiler for the go-fast specs, reminding you the 2016 Camaro is lighter, more rigid and has grown more muscular than its predecessor.

As a result, the Corvette-engined SS model, whose 6.2-liter V8 delivers 455 hp, can cover the 0 to 60 mph sprint in 4 seconds flat, when fitted with the 8-speed auto. Stick shift drivers will have to wait an extra 0.3s for the task to be completed.

As for the quarter mile run, this is completed in 12.3s at 116 mph. The three-pedal setup brings those figures to 12.5s at 115 mph.

The SS, which rides on Goodyear Eagle F1 rubber, packs matching stopping power, as it can come to a halt from 60 mph in 117 feet. On the skidpad, the 2016 Camaro SS can pull up to .97 g.

Thanks to the middle finger treats offered by the never-ending muscle car race between Detroit’s Big Three, the V8 Camaro has now one-upped the Mustang GT.

Just as importantly, the 2-liter turbo four-equipped Camaro isn’t too shabby either. The 275 hp mill can push the cat to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. However, this is the only 2016 model that’s faster with a manual. As for the 1/4-mile run, this is dealt with in 14 seconds flat.

Despite the respectable figures above, the 2016 Camaro sees itself falling behind the four-cylinder Mustang, whose 310 hp 2.3-liter EcoBoost takes the cake with a 5.1s time for the 0 to 60 mph sprint.

When it comes to the V6, the 2016 Camaro can reach 60 mph in 5.1s, while requiring 13.5s for the quarter mile shenanigan.

Weight and pricing

Chevrolet itself admitted the 5th Gen Camaro had weight issues, so their engineers were determined to bring the 2016 model to modern fitness standards. And they delivered. The Camaro SS is now 223 lbs lighter, and if we do the power-to-weight maths, we end up with a 14 percent improvement. Moreover, the (not necessarily fair) base model comparo reveals a 390 lbs drop.

While the Camaro is lighter than the Mustang in all three engine configurations, the torsional stiffness base has also been covered - the new model outperforms its predecessor by 28 percent.

However, Chevy was also effervescent in terms of the 2016 Camaro’s pricing. For instance, the $26,695 starting price makes it $1,995 more expensive than before, albeit with superior standard equipment.

Switching to the 2016 Camaro SS brings the real wallet burden - the $37,295 starting price means the 2016 model is $2,795 more expensive than the 5th generation V8, while placing it over $5,000 above the Mustang GT.

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will greet you on dealership floors across the country starting this fall.
