BMW went off on a limb when it gave it the Sport Activity Coupe name but with sales of over 200,000 units so far, you can’t really call the SAC experiment a failure.

Therefore, here we are today, looking at a brand new version that looks ... controversial. Looking at how BMW aficionados received the new X6 the sides are once again split. However, if in the case of the 5-door MINI the camps were almost equally balanced, this time, the new model seems to be getting most of the thumbs up.

If you were to ask us, the 2016 model is a definite improvement. If not for the aesthetics (that will forever be controversial subject), at least for the tech bits that go deeper than the skin.

Sure, the engine line-up is nothing new. We the 4.4-liter V8 in the xDrive50i, the triturbo 3-liter diesel in the M50d and the 3-liter single turbo xDrive30d model at first, all of them older aquintances. The iDrive and ConnectedDrive features though, those make a true difference, as well as the new interior.

It’s pretty obvious that BMW wanted to turn this model into a fashion/lifestyle icon. The new Individual trims and materials are a definite step up and so are the new paints and optional features. Sure, you’d have to pay for them but when you’re looking at a car like this, you probably have deep enough pockets to afford a couple of things off the options list.

You also get the Active Traffic Jam Assistant that will basically take over the wheel in heavy traffic and keep you in lane and behind the car in front of you at a specified distance. It will even go around corners for you. The transmission was also updated to offer up to 22% more fuel efficiency and is now connected to the Navigation System, telling you when to take your foot off the gas, to be as efficient as possible.

All of these make the X6 a new reference point in the segment, a segment that is currently populated by almost no other alternatives but that will get a serious boost in the shape of the new Mercedes-Benz MLC in the near future.

Until we get to see the new car from Mercedes-Benz, we’ll set you up with a couple of great wallpapers which you can download for free from the gallery below.
