We knew that BMW is planning a full plug-in hybrid offensive and that it will soon start but we never expected the company to actually confirm the rumors by releasing a part of the spec sheet before its unveiling. However, we now know that the 328e model will be coming out along with the facelift and there are some big changes happening in Bavaria.
For example, the car was just spotted testing for the first time on the Nurburgring as the Green Hell is now open for testing purposes and other kinds of ... racing! Needless to say that things look intriguing.

The car in the photos snapped by our team of spy photographers seems to be a bit on the heavy side of things, the suspension showing a lower profile than on a regular model. Sure, the huge wheels could also contribute to this optical illusion and we have to agree that they look absolutely brilliant.

This particular light-alloy design might also be exclusive to the 328e model but we can’t tell for sure at the current moment. Other changes apart from the ones referring to the powertrain and transmission focus on the front and rear end design. They are both going to get updates but don’t expect big changes.

Our source inside Munich claims that adaptive LED headlights will be introduced as an optional feature for the first time on the 3 Series while the rear end will also get a similar treatment.

On the technology side of things, the 328e will be using a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and a synchronous electric motor that will probably be integrated in the gearbox, just like on the xDrive40e X5.

The combined output will be 245 HP and around 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque according to BMW, numbers that are better than on the standard 328i model that has 245 HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

The electric range will be close to 22 miles (35 km) while the car will reach up to 75 mph (120 km/h) in EV mode. Even when the two power units are working together, the fuel consumption should be extremely small, rated at 117 mpg or 2 l/100 km with CO2 emissions at 50 grams/km.
