Cabin quality is definitely one of the first things that come to mind when talking about Ingolstadt’s products and the second-generation Q7 won’t disappoint. For now, we only have two images, but these reveal enough of the center console and dashboard to give us a good view on how the interior styling is evolving.

We’ll start with the steering wheel, which brings a new four-spoke layout. Usually, Audi’s 4-spoke wheels were less appealing than it’s 3-spoke ones, but the new design comes to change that. It’s all thanks to the silhouette of the two bottom spoke and, even though it’s a far stretch, this somehow reminds us of the “Y” theme Lamborghini uses for its headlights and taillights.

For those obsessed with driving dynamics, a pair of paddles is present.

Interestingly enough, the dashboard instruments are not digital, but this is one aspect that we expect to change by the time this Audi makes it into production.

We’ll go over the infotainment screen quickly, as this is covered by the test engineer’s laptop. By the way, this guy seems to have no “control”.

The biggest surprise here have to be the silver buttons that sit well below the infotainment display, right above the ashtray. These remind us of the piano-like units we’ve seen on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Moving to the center console, the touchpad has grown in size, so if you want to write a love letter to your SO using this feature, you’ll probably be able to do so. The two rotary controllers of the MMI are obviously present, while the shifter for the automatic gearbox is new, using the same thick approach as the one on the A8, but coming with angular styling.

The big picture

The new Q7 will be underpinned by the new MLB Evo modular architecture. With the help of aluminium, the new platform will allow the car to shed up to 800 lbs (363 kg).

Under the bonnet, we’ll get a revolution, even though the car will be launched with... normal engines. Thus, at first, we’ll get most of the mills from the 2015 Audi A6 and A7, including the 3-liter diesels delivering 218, 272 and 320 (twin-turbo) PS. Audi is looking to expand its TDI offer in the US, so we could expect more than one oil burner in America. Further along the way, we’ll receive "tri-turbo" TDI and e-tron versions of the SUV. The range will be topped by a performance version. Tentativelly dubbed S Q7, this will be motivated by the 4-liter TFSI V8.

The 2016 Q7 is expected to bow at the Detroit Motor Show, so set an important appointment for January 12, 2015.
