The Mercedes-Benz GLA might be a far newer model, but we kind of like the updated Q3 more. It looks like a real SUV, not a jacked up hatchback. The front end is masculine, and there's enough glass out back to give you decent visibility.

Let's look at what makes the 2016 model different from the 2015 one. First of all, the mid-life facelift brings a new hexagonal grille that connects to the xenon+LED headlights via a large brushed aluminum surface. The taillights have been updated, and there is more standard equipment available. There are new paint finishes and choices of wheels too.

The cheapest soft-roader Audi offers is still more expensive than a Toyota Camry. Prices for the 2016 Q3 start at $33,700 and for that you get heated 12-way adjustable leather seats, a panoramic roof, a reversing camera, Alu-optic MMI controls and LED ambient lighting.

Audi's engine is about the same as the one used by the GLA 250, but it's slightly down on power. The 2-liter turbo is rated at 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft (280 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a six-speed Tiptronic automatic that helps it get 20/29/23 mpg (city/highway/combined). Sadly, you have to pay extra for the quattro all-wheel drive ($35,800 for the Premium Plus quattro).

Available Equipment:
  • Sport package including front sport seats with extendable thigh support and Audi drive select
  • MMI navigation plus with 7.0-inch color monitor included in Technology package, standard with Prestige trim
  • Power tailgate with a programmable preset opening angle, standard with Prestige trim
  • The Prestige trim package includes extended infotainment and convenience features including Audi connect®
  • Audi side assist uses radar to help make changing lanes easier included in Technology package, standard with Prestige trim
  • BOSE Surround Sound system. This system features a ten-channel receiver delivering 465 watts of power to 14 speakers standard on Prestige trim
  • S line exterior package on Prestige trim
  • Full LED headlights and dynamic rear turn signals on Prestige trim

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
