This is a car we had been following for a long time, even before it had been announced. The all-new Audi A4 allroad is what you need to show to every guy that says he hates SUVs. Best of all, it's coming to Britain in a few months.
To be more precise, you will be able to place an order at the end of April and expect to see it being delivered to you in June.
One of the major highlights is the first ever quattro system designed with "ultra" fuel saving technology. It's still a Torsen differential, but it decouples the rear diff and the two prop shafts at the back when under light loads. Audi says it might reduce fuel consumption by about 5%.
Among the other fuel-saving features introduced to the A4 is a new type of stop-start system which uncouples the engine from the gearbox when the driver brakes at speeds below 4mph.
We've talked a lot about this ultra quattro system, yet we never knew what engine would be the first to get it. Surprise, surprise! It's the 2.0 TFSI making 252 PS, otherwise known as the typical A4 engine in America. Later on, TDI diesel engines and ones that have manual gearboxes will also receive it.
Among the engines that will be available from the outset in the UK are two power outputs for the 2.0 TDI four-cylinder diesel. We'd pick the 190 PS version, combined with a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Also available will be Audi's big 3.0 TDI V6 making 218 PS, just like in the Q7 TDI ultra. A high-output model with 272 PS will be the only engine in the A4 allroad to have an 8-speed automatic gearbox that will take you to 62 mph in about 6 seconds.
Modified springs and dampers increase ride height by 23mm over the standard A4 wagon, while bigger wheels add another 11mm. Despite all this technology, the model is relatively light, as the A4 allroad quattro 2.0 TFSI is said to tip the scales at 1,580 kg (3,483 lbs).
