Make no mistake about it, the Alfa Romeo 159 was a drop-dead gorgeous D-segment sedan (and wagon) when it launched in 2005 and when it was phased out in 2011. The Italian manufacturer didn't offer a compact executive car for four years now, but that's about to change on June 24th with the Alfa Romeo Giulia (internally known as Tipo 952).
Harald Wester, the CEO of Alfa Romeo and Maserati, declared to the automotive media that June 24th will be "a milestone" for the Turin-based automaker and all Alfisti eagerly awaiting the Tipo 952. Better late than never, Harald highlighted that Alfa's synergy with Fiat from 1986 onwards didn't fare well for the carmaker.

Speaking to Autovisie, Wester told the publication: "The 159, for example, was a result of the partnership between GM and Fiat and was pretty much a mess." Other than the bite-the-back-of-your-hand beautiful styling inside and out, we thoroughly agree with Harald's words.

The official revealed that the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia (Tipo 952) will indeed use an all-new vehicle architecture, joined by a fresh take in design and brand new powerplants and cog swappers. From 2-liter to 3-liter displacement, all the turbocharged petrol and diesel engines that will animate the rear-wheel drive (and AWD) Alfa Romeo Tipo 952 will enhance the comely styling of the new model.

Thanks to Leonardo Bottazzo and Volkan Karaosmanolu, enthusiast Facebook community Alfa Tipo 949 got their hands on some photos of the all-new Giulia (Tipo 952) and would you just look at those LED-accented lights and 4C-inspired front fascia.

It will be a centrefold of a design in its segment, hands down about that. With Maserati know-how for the engines and, most probably, a ZF-developed 8-speed automatic and Alfa Romeo's twin-clutch transmission, the Giulia can talk the talk and walk the walk. Regarding the possibility of a wagon or coupe, we have some genuinely good news.

Harald Wester told the previously mentioned publication that the Alfa Romeo Giulia (Tipo 952) is developed as a global model, with a station wagon to follow as soon as Alfa Romeo will reestabilish itself onto the market. No word on a two-door coupe based on the Tipo 952 yet.

On an ending note, the Italian company will use its new-found enthusiasm to build a crossover SUV internally known as Tipo 949. Alfa Romeo's first-ever SUV will be based on the underpinnings of the Giulia (Tipo 952) and will enter the market in 2016.

With a rear and all-wheel drive chassis, Maserati know-how, a Ferrari-derived twin-turbo V6 engine, and a wagon and SUV in the pipeline, Alfa Romeo's future is in good hands. Cometh June 24th.

UPDATE: this is the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia QV.
