2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia (Tipo 952) Spied in Production Guise – Video, Photo Gallery

To this moment, the Alfa Romeo Tipo 952 (or Giulia as some people insist it will be called) has been caught on film wearing the bodywork of a Maserati Ghibli with shortened rear doors. On this occasion though, the soon-to-debut Alfa Romeo Tipo 952 was spied in production guise in the glorious Italian Alps.

A man called Marco was minding his own business when, all of a sudden, he saw a heavily camouflaged machine – a four-door sedan. Without beating around the bush, Marco got his smartphone, snapped some pictures of the thing and sent them to the Alfa Tipo 949 community on Facebook. As you can see for yourself in the first five photographs in the adjacent gallery, Marco did what the professional carparazzi couldn't: catch the production version of the Tipo 952.

To replace the old and jaw-droppingly gorgeous Alfa Romeo 159, the Giulia/Tipo 952 is going to debut on June 24th. The unveiling will mark the Italian brand's 105th anniversary and its commercial resurrection. To debut an all-new platform dubbed "Giorgio," based on what you might find underneath a Maserati Ghibli, the soon-to-debut Alfa Romeo sedan is going to be a real visual treat.

Despite all the camouflage masking its beautiful proportions, it's easy to understand that what is hiding underneath the black pajamas is the most beautiful D-segment sedan we've seen in ages. Long and low hood, curvaceous roofline, a subtle boot spoiler, two exhaust pipes, short front and rear overhangs and the wheels pushed as much as possible to the corners of the car, you name it, the Tipo 952 promises a lot.

Other than lots of engineering for the rear and all-wheel drive platform, the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia/Tipo 952 will debut new engines and transmission options for the Italian manufacturer. Starting with a 2.2-liter turbo diesel with 135 to 210 horsepower outputs, the lineup of new engines will include a 2-liter turbo petrol with outputs ranging from 180 to 330 horsepower.

Then there's a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 petrol with up to 480 horsepower. A 3-liter force-fed V6 motor is believed to be offered as well, churning out from 275 to 340 Italian stallions. A lot of Maserati know-how went into the research and development of the Alfa Romeo Tipo 952.

We believe it will adopt the ZF-developed 8-speed automatic transmission from the Ghibli and a 6-speed manual that'll be mated as standard on four-cylinder engines. Slated to start production in Italy in December 2015, first deliveries are to be handled in the spring of 2016.

Companies that Alfa Romeo is believed to have contracted to make the Giulia/Tipo 952 happen include OMR, Brembo, Magneti Marelli, IMR Industries, Robotec and Garrett for the turbocharging technologies. In terms of weight, the lightest Tipo 952 is expected to tip the scales at 1,400 kilograms (3,086 pounds).

As seen on this Formula 1 season's Ferrari race cars, Alfa Romeo is preparing a modernized logo to apply on the Giulia/Tipo 952. Rumor has it a wagon/shooting brake will follow the four-doon sedan shortly, with the possibility of a two-door coupe hanging by a thread. It would be a darn shame if the Audi A5, BMW 4 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe would continue to have the segment to themselves.

Last but not least, the newest Alfa Romeo of them all is expected to measure 4.65 to 4.7 meters in length and spawn a crossover SUV. Until the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia/Tipo 952 is revealed on June 24th, the gallery below will have to suffice. Unofficial sketches and renderings of the Tipo 952 are included.
