The long-discussed Afla Romeo Giulia has recently had its first encounter with our spy photographers. This was a rather strange hunt, since their pray was hiding under a Maserati Ghibli body.
The Giulia will serve as a 159 successor, but we’re expecting a certain upmarket move, with the Fiat Group brand taking quite a lot of time to thoroughly develop the project.

The out-of-place tracks and wheelbase show the platform underneath is smaller than the Ghibli, while the test mule, which friends like to call the Tipo 952, was riding on 17-inch wheels.

There’s much more to be discussed about the Giulia’s platform though. The architecture is expected to be all new, a rear-wheel drive design that will also allow all-wheel drive applications. Upon making its debut on the Giulia, this will also find its way under other Fiat group vehicles, with Chrysler and Dodge being likely candidates.

While the test car seen here, which was spotted at a gas station, seemed to be feeding itself with diesel, the Giulia will offer a wide engine line-up. The king of this jungle will see Alfa treat us with the GTA moniker once again.

The Giulieta GTA will borrow Maserati’s twin-turbo V6, with the output set to sit in the 500 hp area, with the engine set to marry a dual-clutch transmission. If the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte are any indication, this Alfa’s character should thrill at any kind of speeds.

Once the Giulia loses its Ghibli shell, the vehicle’s body is expected to bring a thrilling design, with a slopping roofline being a certain presence. Little is known about the Giulia’s design right now, with the best hint lying in the Gloria Concept. This was released back in 2013 by a team of students at the European Design Institute, who joined forces with the Alfa Styling Center. Nonetheless, the actual car should be rather far from that design - we’ve added an image of the Gloria in the gallery below.

As expected, the interior of the Giulia test mule is an unfinished business. However, going past the Jeep-sourced steering wheel, we can see a few elements of the future Alfa.

Alfa Romeo will gift us with the Giulia next year, with the sedan set to arrive as a 2016 model. This model will have a global appeal, with the US and Asia also included on its map. As stated in Fiat-Chrysler’s five-year plan, the Giulia is just one of the Alfa Romeo models that’s set to be launched by 2017. When exactly to expect the Giulia? Q4 2015.
