In April 2014, Volkswagen took to the stage in New York with the 2015 Golf SportWagen Concept, a preview of the car that replaced the a similarly named Jetta model. Nine months later, deliveries are ready to be taken and we have pricing information to share.
According to a statement released today by VW USA, the suggested retail price for a base Golf SportWagen TSI S is $21,395, which is basically compact SUV money. However, the cargo space you get with this car is much better than a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. In addition, you get the new 1.8-liter turbo engine as standard with this car and fuel economy, torque and power delivery will all be noticeably better.
Standard kit includes 15-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth, touchscreen satellite radio, powered windows and air conditioning. The DSG gearbox is available as a $1,100 optional extra.
Next up is the Golf SportWagen TSI SE, which for $26,995 adds fog lights, bigger wheels, a panoramic sunroof, a reversing camera, keyless start and a Fender audio system. Options also include the $995 Bi-Xenon headlights with LED DRLs and a $695 Driver Assistance package which includes the Forward Collision Warning System and front and rear Park Distance Control.
The SEL model is the top of the range for the 1.8-liter engine and adds roof rails, 18-inch wheels, navigation, both the packages we mentioned above and better seats with 12-way power adjustment.
But the big surprise for the 2015 Golf SportWagen is that it's available with a brad new EA288 2-liter TDI Clean Diesel making 150 hp. It starts at $24,595, "a reduction of almost $2,000 over the previous base TDI model price.
After that, the range works pretty much the same as it does with the TSI engine, but the SE and SEL trims cost $1,000 extra because of the more advanced diesel, which by the way gets 43 mpg highway.
Our say: The 1.8 TSI SE model would be our pick. But rumor has it an Alltrack model with AWD will debut in 2016, so you might want to wait before buying.
