Pay close attention to the pattern on the camouflage covering the Volvo XC90 prototype in the adjacent images. This isn’t just a new camo, as it also signals the SUV has entered one of the final development stages.
This falls in line with the expected release schedule for the XC90, which should be presented in August before making its public debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October and hitting the market in spring 2015.
Like the Audi Q7, the XC90 is that kind of SUV that has soldiered on with minor upgrades while its competitors have received a new generation. Actually, the Swedish SUV came out in 2003, while the German model was released in 2005.
Nonetheless, the second-generation XC90 is a major step for Volvo, as the vehicle will introduce the new SPA (Scalable Platform Architecture), which will be found in all future Volvos from the S60 to the top of the range.
Aside from the usual weight benefits brought by the platform, this was designed with outstanding passive and active safety features in mind, as Volvo wants to regain the title of the safest brand in the world.
Underneath that camo, we’ll find something similar to what the Volvo Concept Coupe and Concept XC Coupe have shown us. For now, all we can see are the new headlights, as well as a part of the taillights- the latter will use a vertical layout.
Under the hood, we’ll find Volvo’s new Drive-E engine family, with all the units being downsized four-cylinder ones. Since performance SUVs are so popular these days, the 2015 XC90 will also enter this category. While we won’t get something like the insane XC90 PUV concept of the past, the range-topping powerplant will be a hybrid one delivering about 400 hp.
Volvo has already revealed the interior of the XC90, which does away with buttons offering a super-modern interface for the driver and passengers. Dubbed Volvo Sensus, this offers a tablet-like integration, like the one in the Tesla Model S, together with voice commands and a Head-Up Display.
In terms of features, Volvo will up the premium ante, offering goodies such as a Bowers and Wilkins audio system.
