Underpinned by the same PL72 platform as the more upmarket Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, the third generation VW Touareg is the cost-conscious man's choice in the mid-size luxury crossover SUV segment. 4 years after the current generation Touareg was launched, the Wolfsburg-based brand has unveiled the facelifted version of the SUV, which is priced in the U.K. between £43,000 and £47,500.
Starting from the 27th of August, British fans of the breed can go into their local VW dealership and order the revised Touareg. At launch, the luxury SUV will be available in no less than 3 trim levels. With first U.K. deliveries slated for November, what exactly is new on the new Volkswagen Touareg facelift and how much are you charged for it?
First of all, let's talk about the oily bits. Only two engine choices will be available at launch - a 3-liter V6 TDI with 204 PS and a punchier 3-liter V6 TDI with 262 PS on tap. Both powerplants integrate Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, which uses AdBlue to lower CO2 emission. Coupled to low-rolling resistance rubber and a coasting function on the standard eight-speed automatic transmission, both 3-liter V6 mills are Euro 6 compliant. The entry-level engine boasts with 173 grams of CO2 per km.
The 2015 Volkswagen Touareg facelift features revised bumpers and grilles, new alloy wheel designs, new exterior colors and cool bi-xenon headlights as standard. Inside, the front seats now come with standard lumbar support, and there are two new optional wood trims called Sapelli Mahogany and Engineered Ebony, while the optional Nappa leather upholstery in the R-Line model is now available in two-tone Flint Grey and Titan Black. An automatic post-collision braking system is also thrown in as a standard feature across the 3-trim range.
Starting with the SE, the basic VW Touareg is equipped with 19-inch 'Salvador’ alloy wheels, an 8-inch color touchscreen with RNS 850 satellite navigation, DAB digital radio and Bluetooth, two-zone climate control, 'Cricket’ leather upholstery, bi-xenon headlights, front fog lights, parking sensors and chrome roof rails. All as standard, we remind you. Both the 204 PS and 262 PS turbo diesel six-cylinder mills boasts with a combined fuel economy of 42.8 mpg. The £44,700 mid-range VW Touareg Escape can be had only with the more powerful V6, which drinks the most fuel with 40.9 mpg combined, but comes with goodies such as the 4XMOTION off-road four-wheel drive system with 50:50 torque split and centre and rear axle mechanical differential locks, a higher off-road suspension, 18-inch ‘Karakum’ alloy wheels, a 100-litre fuel tank, extra underbody protection, black roof rails and a headlight cleaning system.
Last but not least, the pick of the bunch is the range-topping VW Touareg R-Line. This model level can be had for £46,000 or £47,500 if you go for the 262 PS engine. The R-Line boasts with bespoke bumpers front and rear, cool sill and wheel arch extensions, 20-inch ‘Tarragona’ alloy wheels, lowered sports suspension, LED daytime running lights and a panoramic glass sunroof. Inside you'll find bespoke R-Line seats and aluminium-look pedals, black roof lining, as well as enhanced equipment including a heated steering wheel, a theatrical electrically operated tailgate and a keyless entry and start system.
