2015 Volkswagen Polo GTI (6R Facelift): New Photos and Details Released

The current generation of Volkswagen Polo received a lot of praise when it was launched in 2010, but the same could never be said about the GTI version. While the engineers deserved a medal for squeezing 180 horsepower out of a 1.4-liter engine, it was never as fun as its competitors, especially the Clio RS.

For the 2015 model year, the GTI seems to have fixed all its problems with a serious barrage of tech updates and a brand new engine. Following the trend set by the MINI Cooper S, the engine in the hot Polo has been made bigger instead of smaller.

A 1.8-liter TSI originally developed by Audi for MQB cars has been dropped under the bonnet. By using a sportier exhaust system and playing with the electronics, VW were able to boost the output to 192 PS, the same as the new Cooper S, and 320 Nm of torque.

As a result of this, the GTI is now able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in only 6.7 seconds. Pair that to a top speed of 236 km/h and a six-speed manual that's available for the first time and you get a very fast and engaging car.

What you need to know about the 2015 Polo GTI:

  • Despite boasting more power and a bigger engine, the new GTI is actually slightly more economical, claiming 5.6 l/100km with the DSG.
  • This is the first Polo ever available with LED headlight, which are optional and cost €970. We think they look like satellite antennas, but they should be much brighter.
  • Cosmetic changes include new bumpers and grille, customized rear spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels and GTI badging on the front bumper.
  • Electronically adjustable dampers are now available
  • The infotainment now includes DAB+ digital radio and a proximity sensor
  • The headlights are automatic,so you don't have to fiddle with the all the time
  • Prices start at €22,275 in Germany for a 3-door in white with a manual. The DSG is €1,500 extra
