Available with a total of 10 different engines that power a lighter chassis, the new Passat B8 from Volkswagen is a very impressive car. However, the temptation to give it more power is high, especially when a twin-turbo mill is available for the first time.
Making as much oomph as your average V6, the Passat 2.0 BiTDI is available across most European markets, delivering 240 HP and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) though a 4Motion all-wheel drive system and new 7-speed DSG gearbox.
This is the crown jewel in Volkswagen's arsenal and it's fallen into the hands of some tuners, B&B Automobiltechnik to be more precise. These are the same guys who did that new Audi TT a few weeks ago and they've beaten everybody to the Passat punch as well.
B&B say they've increased the boost of the engine and managed to get 300 HP out of the 2-liter diesel block. That's the same as a Golf R, however, the torque figure of 630 Nm (464 lb-ft) is basically as much as two Golf GTIs.
If that doesn't impression, how about a BMW rival? The current 330d version of the 3 Series needs 5.6 seconds to reach 100 km/h with the help of its 8-speed automatic, so it's actually slower than this tuned Passat, even though it has a bigger 3-liter diesel engine.
Of course, this being a new car, it's not cheap. B&B demands €3,950 for the engine mods. If that's too much for your, consider the €1,298 package, which "only" gets you 275 HP and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque. That's as cheap as an average factory opiton, like a panoramic roof or larger alloys. Worth it? We think so.

0 to 100 KM/H in 5.5 seconds
The factory Passat 2.0 BiTDI needs 6.3 seconds to reach 100 km/h, which is about the same as a GTI. But the tuned model requires 0.8s less. At 5.5 seconds, this large, comfortable sedan/wagon could be compared in terms of performance to an Audi S3 Cabriolet. If that doesn't impression, how about a BMW rival?
