About a year ago, Subaru was promising the WRX STI would look totally different to the basic Impreza sedan. TShock and awe: that didn't happen. While the latest symmetrical all-wheel drive car for the road is every bit a Subaru, it's not a lot more modern than the STIs from 10 years ago.
For about $30,000, the STI offers a 2.5-liter turbo with 305 hp, a manual gearbox and not much else. We think this is the sort of change that should have been made: two doors for twice the style.
But, Subaru is this sort of Volvo of the Japanese carmakers and they will never make an impractical car. Just to give you an example, last year, they created a complicated diagram for how to fit four tires inside the trunk of the BRZ, useful for when you switch to winter ones. So a two-door STI is never going to happen. It's a shame, really, because to some people this would have been the Porsche Cayman with the engine in the right place for half the money.
