2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Receives New CVT Gearbox

Mitsubishi's best-seller gets a few new or improved bits and bobs for the 2015 model year, chief among which is the next-generation CVT transmission described as the "equivalent to a seven-speed (automatic) transmission." We're not so sure about that comparison, but we're keeping our fingers crossed the new box delivers better response and gear shift times.

So what else is new on the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport? Well, it's worth mentioning that the 148 horsepower 2-liter four-pot engine received a handful of enhancements that slightly improve the compact crossover's economy figures. Preliminary estimates (non-EPA) hint that the front-wheel drive model can achieve 28 mpg combined, while the four-wheel drive version returns 27 mpg on the combined cycle.

Aside from the single digit all around increase in fuel economy, only the ES 2WD model is offered as standard with a five-speed stick shift transmission, not the CVT box. Another big mechanical first is the addition of an all-new electric power steering system, while the interior gets better insulating materials and thicker glass for added comfort. On the outside, a noteworthy feature is represented by the revamped LED daytime running lights.

The cabin hasn't been forgotten, with customers now able to customize the trim surrounding the multimedia system in carbon, piano black or silver. Although prices haven't been announced yet, expect the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport to carry a starting MSRP of around $21,000 including destination charges.
