Easter is coming and it seems Volkswagen of America is in the mood to hide some eggs. Hidden inside a short and not very sweet press release about their March US sales, the company announced a 2015 model year Jetta is on schedule to make its debut later this month.
Of course calling it the 2015 model year only hints at updates, but since we follow VW's product schedules it's easy to spot an upcoming facelift. The model will still be based on the PQ35 architecture, like the outgoing Golf, but a new front and rear end design will be introduced.
Like with the Polo facelift, lots of interior goodies will probably be taken from the Golf 7, including the new multi-function steering wheel and the new info/nav system.
Don't expect radical engine changes. The new 1.8-liter TSI turbo has already been launched last year, replacing the aging 2.5-liter. It's been getting great reviews for the improvements in economy, refinement and low-end torque.
The only other engine that desperately needs changing is the basic 2-liter, which could easily be swapped out for the 1.4 TSI turbo, which so far has never been available stateside.
Jetta sales have been flat in 2014. Last month, the compact sedan managed 13,687 deliveries, 6.3% more than last year. However, sales have been helped by better weather. Golf sales are also down -35.3% in March, as VW is launching a new model built in Mexico.
“We continue to see steady demand for our TDI Clean Diesels as well as our core vehicles,” said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America. “With the Spring selling season upon us, we expect to see more stability ahead as we lay the groundwork for the launch of the all-new Golf coming later this summer.”
