This fresh piece of news is in from Hyundai land. When the company announced the 2015 Sonata last year, they mentioned something about Apple CarPlay and Android Auto being available later on during the car's lifecycle. But last week, a guy turned in for his first oil change and got a bit of a shock.
That's right, when his 2015 Sonata came back, it had been retrofitted with Android Auto for free. How's that for a nice bonus?
How would you feel if something like this were to happen to you? After a couple of hours waiting, you'd probably turn to your wife and say something like "I swear, I'm never going to pay these amateurs to change my oil again. I mean, how long can it possibly take? They're probably just goofing off and…. Oh, I have CarPlay now, which is awesome."
The photo above was posted on Reddit by Hollyw0od. The good news is that he got both systems installed. The bad news is that not every 2015 Sonata is eligible because you need to have the new model with the largest 8-inch navigation package.
Some newer Hyundai and Kia models from the 2016 model year are getting the feature too, without requiring retrofits. But if you happen to buy a 2015 Sonata with the basic 5-inch screen… tough luck. Another problem you might encounter is phone compatibility since the Samsung Galaxy S4 on Verizon isn't working with Android Auto right now. Anything below the S4 and you're probably in trouble.
To understand what all the fuss is about, we suggest you check out the following video from Android Authority, where they plug the S6 Edge into the car. Basically, it's like having your phone functions, like calling, texting or Google Maps on the screen. Nifty!
