Volkswagen of America has just announced it will begin taking orders for the first 500 units of the 2015 Golf R, all of which will belong to the launch edition. Die-hard Golf fans will have to fork over an impressive sum of $39,090 plus destination in order to get behind the wheel of one.
All of the 500 models will be painted in this sexy Lapiz Blue Metallic, which everybody agrees is the best color for a Golf R. They will get standard bi-xenon headlights and 19-inch Cadiz-style alloys. Also included are GPS navigation, Park Distance Control, adaptive dampers and Fender audio system.

The first 500 owners will receive a special VolkswagenDriver Gear R accessory kit that includes a Volkswagen R watch, a serialized carbon fiber keychain and serialized VIN-specific certificate. In short, they will be treated like hot hatch royalty.

The only problem is, of course, the price. A full-spec WRX STI Limited is cheaper at $38,495 plus destination. Even the Audi S3 sedan is within reach, costing $2,000 more than the Golf R Launch Edition, though not as well equipped.

For the true Golf R fans, this is a great deal, especially when you consider this is the fastest Volkswagen of all time. Thanks to a new 2-liter turbo engine, the R delivers 292 bhp and 280 lb-ft (379 Nm) of torque. Its 4Motion all-wheel drive system helps it rocket from 0 to 60 miles per hour in only 4.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

The standard Golf R will follow about a month after the limited edition. It will be priced from $36,595 (plus $820 destination charges) and will come with standard 18-inch alloys, bi-xenon headlights, 5.8-inch touchscreen display with SiriusXM Satellite radio, ambient lighting, heated front seats, Bluetooth & iPod connectivity, keyless access, push button start, rearview camera, dual-zone climate control and 12-way power driver's seat.
