Let's say, for the sake of speculation, your wildest dream was to drive a half-ton pickup truck running on CNG or propane. Sure, for those used to burning gallons and gallons of diesel that's a blasphemy, but Ford begs to differ.
As a result, the 2016 Ford F-150 equipped with the 5.0-liter V8 engine will be available with a gaseous fuel prep option, making it the only light-duty pickup capable of running on compressed natural gas or propane.
The package includes upgraded intake and exhaust valves, as well as valve seats to ensure the engine performs to Built Ford Tough standards, says Ford. So, if Ford is America's truck leader, it seems they are trying to explore new paths to clean technologies, other than electric and hybrid solutions.
Of course, such a decision only came after the market was carefully studied, with intensified focus on what the customers want.
“We surveyed customers likely to use natural gas or propane, and 72 percent told us they want to have these alternative-fuel capabilities available on F-150 with the 5.0-liter V8 engine,” said Jon Coleman, Ford fleet sustainability and technology manager.
The Blue Oval official is also optimistic regarding the impact of the conversion, as he expects the package to be more successful than it was on the 2014 F-150 truck powered by the 3.7-liter V6. However, we'll hold our horses about that and allow time, buyers and sales give the last word on that.
CNG/propane engine prep from the factory costs $315 before the customer chooses a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier to supply fuel tanks, lines and unique injectors. In addition, upfits will have a price tag ranging between $7,500 and $9,000, but that depends on fuel tank capacity.
