2015 Ford F-150 Improves Power Sliding Rear Glass

As the leader of the full-size pickup truck segment, Ford looked at every possible way to improve the 2015 Ford F-150, and that includes the rear window glass. Now, the idea of a sliding rear glass or even a power-sliding rear glass isn’t a new idea to this segment, Ford has created an innovative way to improve upon this convenient feature.

Instead of the three-piece rear windows that most trucks with sliding glass have, this new window design uses just two pieces of glass. Developed along with supplier Magna International, this new rear window is less complex, weighs less and even looks better than the sliding rear glass on other trucks.

Toyota might still have the coolest idea for a rear pickup glass where the entire window lowers, but there’s no doubt that adds a decent amount of weight and complexity to design. It’s not clear how much weight was saved from this glass alone, but overall, Ford help shave close to 700 pounds from the curb weight of the 2015 F-150 compared to the current model. Although the opening looks small in these pictures, Ford assures us that this window has the same size opening as any other truck with a similar sliding glass.

These days, most sliding rear windows add the convenience of opening at the expense of a rear defroster, but the F-150 offers the best of both worlds. Better yet, its flush design adds to the clean styling that has been built into the all-new 2015 Ford F-150.

“Delivering the latest in innovation and technology to our customer is a top priority for Ford,” said Noah Mass, Ford body mechanisms manager. “The seamless sliding rear window is another great example of the intricate detail that goes into producing the next-generation F-150, setting it apart from any pickup on the market today.”
