After it was previewed at the Geneva Motor Show in concept guise, the Blue Oval is applying the finishing touches on the second-generation Ford Edge. The D-segment SUV was recently spotted by our carparazzi while testing in Europe, which reconfirms that the model will be exported to European markets as well.
Compared to the pre-production vehicle spotted in September 2013 bearing Michigan license plates, the car spotted in Europe is a little bit more revealing thanks to the not so over-the-top camouflage. So what is there to be expected from the upcoming Volkswagen Touareg rival? For starters, it's underpinned by the same Ford DC4 global platform shared with the Fusion/Mondeo and the upcoming S-Max people carrier.

According to Stephen Odell, Ford executive VP of Europe, Middle East and Africa, the second-generation Ford Edge "gives consumers in Europe a tantalising glimpse of the upscale Ford SUV experience that’s waiting just around the corner.” So clearly, this model will be marketed as a high quality, upmarket product.

Showcased by the Ford Edge Concept vehicle at the 2013 Los Angeles Motor Show, the production version of the SUV will sport a longer wheelbase and a longer overall length than its smaller brother, the Escape/Kuga. Thanks to the elongated chassis, the Edge will presumably offer seating for seven thanks to a three row configuration.

The vehicle spotted by our talented spy photographers indicates that the trapezoidal grille and sideswept headlights will both make it on the production version, while the tail lights incorporate a generous amount of LEDs. If you look closely, you'll see it's been gifted with dual exhaust tips, indicating that the 2.3-liter turbo four-pot from the 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost might find its way under the bonnet of this SUV.

Ford Focus-inspired Active Grille Shutters and Auto Start-Stop will be available as well, along with an innovative air curtain that sends airflow around the front wheels to enhance aerodynamic efficiency. Speaking of efficiency, the most frugal engine option is expected to come in the form of a 2.0-liter EcoBoost mill. In the United States, the Blue Oval will most likely offer a performance model marketed as the Edge Sport.

The 2015 Ford Edge will be manufactured at Ford's Oakville Assembly plant near Toronto, Canada as will be exported to more than 60 markets including China and South America. Production is slated to start this fall according to more or less official reports, with the first units expected to hit U.S. showrooms in early 2015.
