Although Ford has yet to announce when the next-generation Edge will arrive in dealerships, we already know that the SUV will be one of the company’s many vehicles to be offered globally, to more than 60 countries.
Unlike the current model, the new Edge will become available in Europe as well, so it was only natural for Ford to ready a preview at the Geneva Motor Show 2014. And by that we mean that the almost production-ready 2015 Edge Concept we’ve seen at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show will be on display in Switzerland until March 16.
Technical details are limited at this point, but expect to see the same evolutionary design on the production Edge, including the bold front grille flanked by narrow headlamps and the horizontal taillights. The vehicle will also feature a range of advanced automated driving technologies, such as self-parking, an obstacle avoiding system and adaptive steering, all of which are still under development.
Powertrains are still a mystery, but Ford says the 2015 Edge will be fitted with Active Grille Shutters and Auto Start-Stop and an innovative air curtain that sends airflow around the front wheels to enhance aerodynamic efficiency. The latter is similar to the “wheel aero curtain” available on the 2015 Mustang.
The next-generation Edge will be built at Ford’s Oakville Assembly plant near Toronto, Canada, a facility that also manufactures the Ford Flex, Lincoln MKX and Lincoln MKT. From there, the Edge will be exported globally. Production is likely to commence by the third quarter of the year.
