The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 isn’t out yet, but we can be certain of one thing - GM engineers are testing the supercar to destruction. Literally. After an example of the Z06 crashed during a session on the Nurburgring last month, a Z06 Convertible has now been involved in an accident in Michigan.
The ‘Ring crash was far from light, but this one seems even more severe - the 650-pony ‘Vette, ruined a bit more than just its Daytona Orange Sunrise paint. The supercar spun in the wet and crashed into another car, with both vehicles ending up on the side of the I-94 in Jackson, Michigan.
The Z06 was wearing manufacturer plates, so this is not a customer car. The Corvette was fitted with the Z07 Performance Package, including the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, which the witness claims were “bald”. Alas, it’s hard to evaluate the state of the rubber from the adjacent images, as the tires are full of mud after going offroad.
This will be one serious piece of American metal that will bring trouble for the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche. A quick glance at the spec sheet reveals a 2.95s time for the 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) run and a 10.95-second quarter mile time. The Z06 promises to be one hell of a handler, with the car pulling 1.2 G in lateral acceleration on the skid pad, when gifted with the aforementioned Z07 Performance Pack.
We just hope customer Z06 don’t end up in our “crash” section. After all, 650 hp on the rear wheels are one spicy recipe.
The whole accident looks like one terrible self-knockout in a ring with steel ropes.
“The vette spun out and took another vehicle with it through a cable wire median, shredding the vehicle to the point where the cable almost came through the drivers seat, and as you’ll see from my pictures, ended up facing backwards on the opposite side of the barrier that it originally spun out from,” a witness told Corvetteblogger. The Z06 was wearing manufacturer plates, so this is not a customer car.
