While Volkswagen continues to roll out more and more variants of the MkVII Golf, the same new MQB platform that underpins it is being put to good use by the engineers working on the new Passat.
The MQB was created as a way to further standardize parts, reducing costs. However, you wouldn't know this by looking at the new Golf, which has a distinctly upmarket fell about it.
The weight reduction aren't that impressive especially if you compare the Golf V with the VII, but the new Golf does have to cary some amazing safety tech.
Where the real fuel saving will come from is in the engine department. For instance, cylinder deactivation is standard with the new 140 PS 1.4 TSI. Auto stop-start will without a doubt be fitted as standard to the next Passat. Al-wheel
Design wise, the B8 Passat will evolve in the same direction as the Golf. Simple elegance is the key word here. Our fresh renderings show a long roofline that almost flows into the taillights and a strong profile line. That's it! No frills, no ridiculous chrome, which is what all Passat owners want.
