Every time there's a new SUV on the market, the guys who spend long hours with their Photoshop cropping tools usually make coupes or pickup trucks out of them… or both. It happened to many BMWs, to the Range Rover Sport and now even the new Audi Q7 has been turned into a truck.
Of course, the only company crazy enough to actually make a random car chop was BMW, who a couple of years ago made a truck version of one of its M3s. It was pretty niftly, not to mention fast and an April Fools joke.
If there's one thing the new Q7 has in common with the truck market, that's the new-found obsession with aluminum construction. The Germans used it to shed a massive 325 kg (716.5 lbs) compared to the older model. The doors, hood, front fenders and rear hatch are all made out of this material we usually associate with aircrafts.
Ford is also obsessed with aluminum, having used it throughout the body of the all-new F-150. The result was improved power-to-weight, lower fuel consumption and best-ever handling. The Blue Oval machine is up to 700 pounds (317.5 kg) lighter than before, almost matching the Audi Q7 diet.
Jokes aside, could you imagine what would happen if Audi and Ford teamed up to make pickup trucks? They would probably dominate the segment and could actually do something good for the environment. By mating Audi's e-tron plug-in hybrid technology with Ford's expertise, a luxury model unlike any other would come out. From rappers to rich farmers, everybody would place a deposit to have a more expensive Bang & Olufsen Advanced Audio System with 3D or full HD screen with internet connectivity and full phone connectivity (Google Android Auto and Apple CarPlay).
For now though, the Audi truck will remain a rancher's wet dream, made a little more palpable by the rendering of Theophilus Chin.
