The first generation Audi Q7 stayed in production for a really long time, too long, some might say. With the world watching, the four-ring automaker decided December was the perfect month to reveal a replacement and we now have the very first official video.
We honestly didn't like the new model much better than the old one, at first at least. However, a week has passed and we can now say that it has grown on us. It looks less like an SUV and more like an allroad, a really big allroad with a chrome grille.
Not all Q7s will look like the one in the video. This one is kitted out with optional large diameter wheels and the S line package, mirroring the sporty look of the potential SQ7 model. However, protective body cladding or winter wheel/tire combinations are likely going to be revealed in 2015.
We called the new Q7 a car of many firsts and that still stands true. It uses the MLB Evo platform to shed 325 kilograms (716 lbs), which is equivalent to the weight of over 4 average people. It's also the first model with a diesel-plug-in hybrid engine and quattro all-wheel drive, which is why emssions can be as low as 50 grams per kilometer.
The latest technologies from the Audi family have been installed. Up front, there's Matrix LED, which dims the beams to stop glare, while inside we have the Virtual Cockpit from the TT and a pop-up screen in the middle of the dash. Both the steering wheel and the MMI have a brand new design, not yet shared with any other Audi.
