2014 Volkswagen Saveiro Cross Pickup Gets Crew Cab Version in Brazil

Want a car that combines the VW Amarok, the Baja Bug and the front end of a Golf? If you're a Volkswagen fan, the answer can only be "Ja, das ist sicher!". We have just the thing. It's called the Saveiro Cross, a pickup from Brazil that has protective body cladding like an Audi allroad and now even comes in crew cab configuration.

Pickup trucks are, for lack of a better word, "cool". People buy them even though they don't need to and if Volkswagen ever decided to randomly offer this thing in Europe and America, we knew a few people who'd jump at the chance to own one.

The new version is called a Cabina Dupla, meaning double cab in salsa talk. Not only have their extended the cabin and wheelbase, but Volkswagen has raised the roof a bit in order to crease sufficient headroom in the back.

The Saveiro might look like a Golf, but it's actually based on the same platform as the Gol, a small hatchback sold in Brazil. Old tech means you're not going to find any TSI engines here, just a 1.6-liter that makes 110 hp and 154 Nm (113.5 lb-ft) on regular gas or 120 hp and 156 Nm (115 lb-ft) on ethanol, a popular fuel in South America. The only transmission option is a 5-speed manual and no, it's not RWD. Still, the Saveiro Cross looks really cool and even though some Americans will say it's wrong-wheel drive, demand for second-hand Subaru Bajas is through the roof right now.
