Do you know why the Corolla bears this name? Well, “Corolla” means “small crown” in Latin, which means the car is a more compact version of a bigger sedan. And that is the mighty Crown model.
While the first models were sold in a bunch of markets, including the US and Australia, the modern Crown is now sold only in Japan. Too bad, because there might be a lot of people wanting a Crown Athlete instead of the Avalon. Not that it’s something wrong with the Avalon, it has a nice interior and comes in a lot of different grades, but it look kinda boring on the outside.
The Toyota Crown Athlete is offered in 11 (!) versions on the Japanese market, starting at ¥3,800,000 ($37,500) and escalating to ¥5,750,000 ($56,700). Of course we’ll not gonna take care of each one here, but you should know it’s available with a 2.5-liter V6, 2.5-liter V6 and 2.5-liter V6 hybrid.
The top trim Crown Athlete 3.5 G is almost Lexus grade, coming with soft faux leather interior trimmings, 18-inch multispoke alloy rims, chrome tipped dual exhaust, electric rear sunshades, adaptive high beam system, Optitron gauge cluster, electric adjustable leather steering wheel with memory, dual climate control, four-way electrically adjustable driver seat with memory and a quality infotainment touchscreen system with navigation and 10 speaker sound system. It’s also available in six exterior colors including the nice Dark Red Mica Metallic finish.
