Besides the new Clio and Twingo, Renault really hasn't done anything major in the past two years. Of course, if you're the type of person who watches Nurburgring videos all day, you'll quickly point out that the something called a "Megane RS Trophy-R" just went round the place in a record-setting 7:54.36.
Now that places Renault at the top of the hot hatch pecking order and they could take advantage of that by offering new models they've never had before… such as a sedan.
One cool idea that's been flying around the internet is a Fluence RS, technically possible but never tried by Renault. Launched in 2009, the Fluence is an affordable compact sedan that rivals VW's Jetta. It's built to a price in Turkey, but was actually developed by the Renault Samsung alliance in Korea, where it's sold as the SM3.
Up next, we're going to take a look at a couple of Fluence RS renderings, made by graphics manipulator Theophilus Chin based on the 2014 version of the sedan, which has cosmetic updates. Larger wheels, a mid-mounted large exhaust pipe and F1-inspired body kit turn humble into hero, a doppelganger for the famous Megane RS.
So where would such a car fit in a real world hot sedan market and what would it offer? Will start by looking at partner company Nissan, which is planning hot Nismo versions of the Pulsar hatch and Qashqai crossover. Both will reportedly have 1.8-liter turbos with about 270 hp, rumors suggesting these are actually coming from Mercedes-Benz.
Renault might also use that engine on a next-generation Fluence, based on the new CMF that's expected to underpin every new compact car made by the French carmaker until the end of the decade. Question is, will the RS treatment work with the Fluence budget brand? We think it would, since there's an abundance of fleet and private customers in Europe and Asia that appreciate the car already.
Our say: So Renault couldn't make a Laguna Coupe RS, but we're seriously looking at a hot Fluence? What has the world come to!
