2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Tested

We really wonder why the pharmaceutical industry is always in pursuit of the perfect memory pill, when sometimes forgetting is best thing you can do. Let’s take the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, for instance. Ask this Jeep to do some cornering and it will be extremely easy to forget you are behind the wheel of an SUV.

It can be pretty difficult to build a case for performance SUVs and yet the market is asking for them, because they bring... tons of fun. It’s as simple as that and, in this respect, the SRT-ized Grand Cherokee trashes its European rivals.

We’re talking about cars like the BMW X5 M, Mercedes ML 63 AMG, Porsche Cayenne or Range Rover Sport Supercharged. Sure, the Old Continent metal is more powerful and faster, but we don’t care. We won’t be spending our track days in SUVs anytime soon, but we do appreciate the Grand Cherokee SRT’s organic feel.

Oh and we also don’t mind the fact that you can buy a decent brand new additional car for the price difference between the Jeep and the aforementioned models. We’ll go with the lesser cabin finish (since this is fine taken in isolation) and keep the money, thank you.

It is this set of thoroughbred sensations that makes the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT perfectly enjoyable in everyday traffic. In other words, you don’t necessarily have to hammer it in order to enjoy your drive. However, when you do weld the throttle to the floor, you’ll be treated with superb natural aspiration. Both in terms of power delivery and when it comes to the soundtrack, such treats are on the brink of extinction in today’s CO2-obsessed world.

Yes, there were a few occasions when we would’ve like a bit of extra muscle. And yes, the 6.4 liters of Hemi up front are bloody thirsty, but you accept this when you buy such a car.

When Chrysler recently announced SRT would reinvent itself as some sort of an in-house tuner for Dodge, many feared for the future of the steroid-aided Grand Cherokee. We didn’t and we’ll go into the details in our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT review.
