The third stage of the 2014 Dakar brought another victory for Honda as Joan Barreda Bort claimed his second win this year. He was followed by reigning champion Cyril Despres (Yamaha), 4'41" slower.
Despres' rival, KTM's Marc Coma came in third, follower by Alain Duclos and David Casteu, on Sherco and KTM bikes, respectively.
Stage 3 was the first point where navigation skills started to be extremely important, as both car and bikes have lost the route and made mistakes more than once, with Pedrero Garcia even heading the exact opposite way once.
The withdrawal count reaches 28 in Stage 3, with the biggest names being Ruben Faria (KTM), Alessandro Botturi (Speedbrain) and Frans Verhoeven (Yamaha).
Overall, Barreda has a 13-minute lead over Despres, who is followed closely by Coma, with Duclos and Chaleco Lopez for the top 5.
Stage 4 links San Juan and Chilecito, with 210 km (miles) of liaison and 352 km (miles) of special stage, most of which on rocky soil.
